Meet our director - Derek Hasted

Workshop is led by Derek Hasted, its founder and general factotum. Derek arranges, typesets and prints the Workshop Collection, leads each session and provides the refreshments too.

Derek has been playing guitar since he was 12, and has taught in the Havant area since 1977, accumulating many years' experience of coaching beginners and leading ensembles.

As well as Classical Guitar, Derek plays a number of other fretted instruments, and also brass and piano.

Derek founded the Guitar Workshop in 1988, and the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra (hago) in 1999.

Many of Derek's players have taken exams in Guitar - he has a 100% pass rate - and his orchestra has won competitions locally and nationally. His compositions and arrangements have featured on radio in this country and overseas, and his range of accessible ensembles sell round the world. They have been played at the West Dean Guitar Festival on more than one occasion.

In 2004, Associated Board commissioned him to write a set of guitar ensembles for their Music Medals scheme for ensemble players.
